The Shannon L. Bybee Advocacy Award

DESCRIPTION:

The Shannon L. Bybee Award was established to commemorate the life and work of Shannon L. Bybee, Past President and friend of the Nevada Council on Problem Gambling, in tribute to his personal commitment, professional dedication, and unselfish support of efforts to proactively address the issue of problem gambling.

PURPOSE:

To carry on the spirit of Shannon’s role as a mentor for individuals who have demonstrated a personal or professional interest in the field of problem gambling.

ELIGIBILITY:

Any professional, student or volunteer who is not employed by the Council and who meets the criteria established for this award, as determined by a committee of its previous recipients. Qualified candidates must have demonstrated personal and/or professional commitment to the field of problem gambling as follows:

  • Academic studies, community service, or professional endeavors related to problem gambling
  • Support of the mission and programs of the Nevada Council on Problem Gambling through volunteer service and community advocacy
  • Desire to gain broader knowledge and experience related to problem gambling
  • Compassion for individuals and families affected by problem gambling

2025 Bybee Award Recipient!

Andrea Dassopoulos, PhD.

Andrea Dassopoulos is a sociologist with extensive experience in problem gambling research. She is a project manager at the Nevada Problem Gambling Project at UNLV’s International Gaming Institute and serves as Research Director for the Oregon Gambling Research Center at the Oregon Council on Problem Gambling. Andrea has led numerous initiatives, including projects integrating problem gambling treatment into opioid treatment programs. Her unique sociological perspective highlights the societal dynamics of gambling harm, contributing to solutions and advancing the field. Andrea’s work bridges research and practice, focusing on improving outcomes for individuals impacted by gambling-related issues.
