2012 CAMPAIGN:

the 10th annual National Problem Gambling Awareness Week too place March 4 - 10, 2012.  The 2012 theme was Anyone... Anywhere... Anytime...  reflecting the reality that any individual or family can experience or be affected by a gambling problem.

Calls to the 24-hour Problem Gamblers HelpLine come from men and women of every age and background in our communities throughout Nevada. Old or young, working or unemployed, blue collar or white collar….they are all in need of help to deal with their own, or someone else’s gambling addiction.

Many of the callers hear about the HelpLine from a family member or friend, or see it posted in a gaming location or printed in a public awareness brochure. Not surprisingly, a growing number of people now say they found the number through….you guessed it....the internet!

It’s a fact of our world that every day more people turn to the internet to get information or share what they know with others. So this year our goal during National Problem Gambling Awareness Week is to maximize the use of social media to share information about problem gambling and the available resources for help.

Promoting Problem Gambling Awareness:

•	“Tweet and a Treat!” - On Wednesday, March 7, 2012, the Council co-hosted an information booth at the UNLV Student Union with our community partner, the Student Organization of Addiction Professionals (SOAP). We handed out bags of candy containing interesting problem gambling facts and challenge everyone to share the information via their Facebook and Twitter accounts.
•	Health Promotion – literature, publications and other problem gambling resource materials were provided free of charge to support health and wellness activities in Nevada communities.
•	Community Partner - Worked together with community partners to help raise awareness of problem gambling in Nevada!

What is National Problem Gambling Awareness Week? During the first week of March each year, since 2003, communities nationwide work to raise awareness about the warning signs of problem gambling and the resources for help. This week is also a celebration of the men, women and families who have already sought help and are experiencing recovery from the effects of problem gambling in their lives. The Nevada Council on Problem Gambling encourages everyone take part in this initiative by promoting awareness of problem gambling and helping to educate our community that treatment is available and it works!
