WHEN THE FUN STOPS® – Employee Awareness Training

Open Enrollment Class – Individual gaming employees may register to attend.  Participation card will be issued to employees upon completion of class to verify attendance.  This program can be relied upon by gaming licensees to satisfy the requirement for employee training under NV Gaming Regulation 5.170 – Programs to Address Problem Gambling.

WHEN THE FUN STOPS®  is a one-hour training program that provides the information your employees need to know about the nature and symptoms of problem gambling and the resources available for help.  A unique feature of this training module is a 23-minute video which explores the phenomenon of problem gambling through the expertise of a Nevada treatment professional and the experiences of four Nevada residents who are successfully dealing with their own gambling problem.

  • Individuals must preregister for the class, held at the Council’s Las Vegas training facility.
  • REGISTER NOW by completing the form below and returning it to the Council with payment of the $40 registration fee.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Many representatives of First Nations, Métis, and Tribal Nations and organizations working on wellness throughout communities in Northwest  Washington and British Columbia have come together to plan this important conference. As our Four Directions conference theme suggests, our goal is to honor the past and protect the future through holistic health, wellness, and recovery support. We hope to bring together First Nations and Tribal leaders, behavioral health directors and counselors, education and prevention experts, and families to support each other with knowledge on health issues, problem gambling and other addictions, and financial and safety concerns that affect all of our communities.

Continuing Education Hours

Evergreen Council on Problem Gambling

The Evergreen Council on Problem Gambling’s training workshops qualify toward the 30 hours of gambling-specific education required by the Washington State and National Problem Gambling Certification Boards for certification. Additionally, ECPG is an Approved Provider of Continuing Education by The Association for Addiction Professionals (NAADAC) and the National Association of Social Workers – Washington Chapter (NASW-WA). Our workshops have also been approved for continuing education by the Addiction Counselor Certification Board of Oregon (ACCBO) and the American Academy of Healthcare Providers in the Addictive Disorders (AAHCPAD). Rally for Recovery! (Las Vegas)

September is National Recovery Month.

Each year the Foundation for Recovery supports recovery month by facilitating a rally and recovery walk. This year we have been joined in this effort by co-hosts WestCare Nevada and Celebrate Recovery Canyon Ridge. Th Rally will be held at Las Vegas City Hall and will include exhibitors, speakers, food and the annual recovery walk.

9th Annual Walk in Memory, Walk for Hope

SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS

wmwh-bannerThe 9th Annual “Walk in Memory – Walk for Hope” community suicide prevention awareness walk will be taking place on Saturday, September 12, 2015, in twelve different communities across the State of Nevada:

Las Vegas/Henderson, Caliente, Mesquite, Pahrump, Elko, Winnemucca, Pyramid Lake, Dayton, Yerington, Fallon, Carson City, Minden, Reno

The WMWH started in Elko in 2006 to raise awareness of the problem of suicide in Nevada, offer healing support to survivors of suicide loss, and connect individuals struggling with thoughts of suicide and the friends and families doing their best to support them to resources and services that can make a difference.

60 Hr. Online Gambling Specialty Training

This 60-clock hour certificate program is 100% online and is broken down into specific course offerings. Each offering is self-paced, but must be completed within three weeks once accessed.  Click HERE for additional information and online registration.

Required Course Offerings:

Basic Disordered Gambling (12 clock hours)
Course will consist of basic disordered gambling knowledge education on the history and social impact of gambling in the US, the historical and theoretical approaches to treating compulsive gamblers, and the predominant effects of disordered gambling on the client and their significant others.

Intake and Assessment (12 clock hours)
Course will consist of education on the indicators of the presence of disordered gambling, identification of client needs, and matching identified needs with appropriate treatment modalities. The course will also include education on identification of common co-morbid disorders and medical conditions that warrant referral and/or consultation.

Significant Other Treatment (12 clock hours)
Course will include education on general family dynamics, effects of disordered gambling on family systems, and facilitating appropriate changes as related to the disordered gambling.

Case Management (12 clock hours)
Course will cover case management for disordered gambling clients, including education on working with disordered gambling clients to establish therapeutic goals, measuring treatment effectiveness, and utilization of resources to effectively accomplish identified goals.

Individual and Group Counseling Skills (12 clock hours)
Course will include individual and group counseling skills with compulsive gamblers, including education that will enhance the counselor’s ability to engage, elicit feelings, and facilitate awareness in the therapeutic relationship with disordered gambling clients.

‘App’rehensive: The Blurring Lines of Gaming/Gambling — and How to Protect Our Most Vulnerable

More than ever, problem gambling specialists need to be aware of technology and the issues that face populations from youth to those in recovery for addictions. Are youth at risk for disordered gambling by merely playing a free poker app? Is a person in recovery at risk by playing frequent, often excessive, online social games? We will talk about the convergence of gaming and gambling and its risks, and provide participants with practical, evidence-based information and tools that are relevant to our everyday work.
   
Objectives:

At the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify several recent trends, technological issues and parallels related to gambling and social gaming.
  • Identify which populations present the greatest risk for harmful consequences related to excessive online behavior.
  • Name at least four tools that can be used to help reduce the risk of harmful consequences of electronic games/gambling.About the presenter: Julie Hynes, MA, CPS. Julie has specialized in problem gambling prevention for the last 12 years. She is a problem gambling prevention coordinator with Lane County Public Health (“PreventionLane”) and adjunct faculty with the University of Oregon, specializing in problem gambling coursework. FREE WEBINAR -Gambling Disorder and Physical Health

Gambling Disorder and Physical Health

Gambling disorder can have a significant impact on physical health, including consequences on sleep, cardiovascular functioning, memory and other stress-related illnesses.   This webinar will review the current state of knowledge around how gambling disorder impacts physical health and vice versa.   Emphasis will be placed on encouraging treatment providers to discuss physical health and self-care as part of the comprehensive treatment plan for gambling disorder patients.  Office-based treatment techniques and strategies to promote exercise, weight loss, health maintenance and positive self-care will be emphasized and reviewed.

Presented by:  Timothy Fong, M.D. Tim Fong

Dr. Fong is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA.  Dr. Fong completed his undergraduate and medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago.  Currently, he is the co-director of the UCLA Gambling Studies Program.   The purpose of this program is to examine the underlying causes and clinical characteristics of problem and pathological gambling in an effort to develop effective, evidence-based treatment strategies. He is the director of the UCLA Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship, a one-year program designed to provide a leading edge clinical and research training experience. Dr. Fong’s research interests include understanding pathological gambling, hypersexual disorders and behavioral addictions from a biopsychosocial perspective.
